2012 Mitsubishi Challenger 2WD Review
SUMMARY
At a base price of $ 36 990 plus legal fees and delivery of the new Mitsubishi Challenger 2WD difficult is a lot of car for not much money.
Great family car hard, you can put in the garage at a price of less than $ 40K are thin on the ground. And much less reach a frugal diesel, a ladder frame chassis down and 4WD toughness “incorporated”, but with the advantage that the weight of 2WD.
But 2WD Mitsubishi Challenger. Well done, more refined (much more) than his older brother Pajero, the advantage of the height of an SUV, and a commercial 3.0 tons of towing capacity, which sounds like the perfect family vehicle trailer.
Was this review, we drove a little ‘more expensive automatic’ Sports Mode ‘five-speed transmission.
INSIDE
Quality: I like two-tone interior, the Challenger is beautifully decorated with high quality feeling dashboard, armrests and tactile surfaces. It ‘also a drum tight as a tight, solid feel at the wheel.
Comfort: The seats are quite comfortable, but less than the Ford Territory. The long legs of passengers prefer to set a higher Squab, but slips in and out with ease. (It will make a platform scale, the car is in a Challenger of course raises the floor.)
But there are plenty of knee and legroom in the second row of the knacker, Chooka and Gino (perhaps to pull your stomach, but …) if you press it in use as a work truck and enough space for three teenage clods.
Features: The rear view camera is available for two-wheel drive diesel automatic Challenger through Convenience Pack, sold for $ 3640 and includes side and curtain airbags to improve vehicle safety.
Outside, the Convenience Package adds 17-inch alloy style grille, fog lights, rain and light sensors and roof rails.
Inside, the package includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, tinted glass, six-speaker audio system and climate control. USB port on LS and XLS.
Storage: start, wide and flat access throughout, is enormous. And ‘long 1,017 mm, 1,027 mm wide and 1,375 mm high. It is 1436 liters of rear seats.
Towing capacity is a real surprise, 3.0 tonnes (with trailer brakes), is responsible for towing the strength of the Triton and Challenger 4X4 4WD.
ON THE ROAD
Driveability: 2.5-liter common-rail direct injection turbo diesel puts out 131kW and willing to 350nm (400 Nm in the manual).
Understressed and gives the Challenger an organized tour 2WD speed when necessary, reviving a little less than 4750rpm red line in the five-speed automatic transmission in each upchange.
We had a five-speed automatic with ‘Tiptronic-style “manual control, there is also a five-speed manual option, which is likely to be the selection of professionals (every three tons of towing capacity).
Fuel consumption is 8.2 l/100km claimed are for the manual and 9.6 l/100 km for vehicles. Not bad for a high-pass wide of the car.
Refinement: The Challenger is surprisingly quiet at the wheel, it’s more like a modern car is not a derivative trading. The 2.5-liter diesel things going with a pleasant buzz diesel on the way.
Not as smooth as new i5 diesel Ranger, but is one of the best balance and discretion.
From the outside there is little noise at idle, especially when warming up, but it’s a diesel – it’s what they do.
Road noise is well insulated, it’s a heck of a lot better than the Pajero for example, and wind noise is not clear that much more than the legal limit.
Suspension: The Challenge (2WD and 4WD) is a bit “Tippy-Toey” – that the road is long but not especially large, and there are a lot of “give” to hang on the corners – especially the burden of “up” from the front wheel.
The result is a certain roll, more than a Pajero, for example, and is slightly inclined to push wide if you are traveling fast.
However, the increase in the sweetest of compliance (coil springs front and rear) is a more comfortable ride overall, and especially an isolated tower in the gravel and washboard. It also has a turning radius than their 4WD.
Braking: Pedal feel is good, braking is pretty self-like and light in the legs (despite the commercial origin of the Challenger). Towing a large ventilated discs front and rear seem to be well up to the task.
SECURITY
ANCAP Rating: 4 stars (score based on the ANCAP crash test Triton)
Safety: Driver and passenger airbags, ABS, electronic brake force distribution, power brake booster, Brake Assist, Brake intelligent, active traction control, active traction control, side impact beams, three-point emergency locking retractor seatbelts front seatbelts with pretensioners, seatbelt warning alert.
WARRANTY AND SERVICE
Warranty: Not a five year/130, 000 km warranty of the vehicle, a 10 year/160, 000 km powertrain warranty and a five year/130, 000 km roadside assistance package.
Maintenance Costs: (TBC)
How it compares | VALUE FOR MONEY
Toyota Kluger KX-R 2WD ($ 39,990) – Next Challenger, Kluger seems closely Fat Albert t-shirts – all the bumps and knocks.
It ‘easy to drive Kluger, despite a vague front-end, but not for diesel and a manual option, and the more expensive front-wheel drive: this is less appropriate than the tow vehicle. (See reviews Kluger)
Ford Territory TX 2WD Wagon 2.7 TD ($ 43,240) – the area is a comparison between the target segment “within the segment.
Excellent Duratorq 2.7-liter V6 diesel and a good ride is the best car in many ways, except for the price – the Challenger is significantly cheaper – and no manual gearbox (performance for commercial buyers). (See the comments of Planning)
Hyundai Santa Fe SLX R-Series Wagon 2WD ($ 36,990) – cheaper for the car, a six-speed gearbox, but no diesel 2 wheel drive option. Buy from a good family, and certainly robust, but is far from the Challenger towing capacity is not made for the type of work from a dealer you throw at it. (See Santa Fe reviews)
Note: All prices are Manufacturer’s List and does not include dealer delivery or the cost of the road.
TMR Verdict | Overall
It is a better buy than its sales figures indicate, the Challenger. The 2WD, at a comfortable level of less than $ 40K purchase price makes it even better.
It is a good size (like I would in the Toyota 4Runner few years ago), one more than reasonable road manners and a ground clearance of a 4×4, but the advantage of the weight of a normal car.
And with the rear wheel drive and towing capacity of trade, which would be reduced to the task you need to tow something big – like a boat, caravan or wild cat.
If it ticks a few boxes on your list, give Mitsubishi Challenger 2 wheel drive once-over.
